State Institute for Vocational Education

The State Institute for Vocational Education - Štátny inštitút odborného vzdelávania (SIOV) as a legal entity is the professional and methodological organisation established directly by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic. It acts as a coordination, pedagogical and counselling body for all secondary vocational schools in SR. It participates in reviews, analyses and creation of conceptual, methodological, analytical and strategic materials for all vocational and apprentice fields of study in SR.

SIOV provides for creation, update and innovation of training programmes, norms for material and technical as well as spatial arrangements of all vocational and apprentice fields of study in the Slovak Republic. It assesses and implements measures and priorities of the school policy, provides counselling and consultation activities in the area of vocational education and training on the national level. It implements national projects funded by the EU Structural Funds and programmes for development of students´ creativity.

The State Institute for Vocational Education is the secretary of the Government Council for Vocational Education and Training in SR, which is the advisory body of the Slovak Government in the area of vocational education and training.

The European Training Foundation in Torino established the Slovak National Observatory at SIOV. Its objective is to collect and analyse information about VET in SR and compare them with the situation in the European Union and other accession countries. Its aim is to collect ideas and initiate proposals for the decision makers.
